From the Author

When I began writing my book, Letting Go into Perfect Love: Discovering the Extraordinary After Abuse, I thought I would simply tell my story. But as the words found paper, I realized that we all traverse a familiar terrain of joys and sorrows. Perhaps we have passed each other on our journeys.Figuratively or literally, we travel long distances in search of happiness, meaning, or love. We climb the highest mountains, we trek across the deserts, and we explore the ocean’s depths. We are restless until we find our heart’s desire.

My book is about how we craft our way through triumphs and tragedies, achievements and mistakes.Over the years, I have learned that we are never alone. Sometimes kind strangers or healers or friends show us the way, and sometimes we are visited by angels.

COVER Letting Go Into Perfect Love Gwen Plano

BLURB:
Inspiring and unforgettable, Letting Go into Perfect Love is a riveting account of a journey through the terror of domestic violence to a faith that transforms all. As a college administrator, Gwendolyn M. Plano lived her professional life in a highly visible and accountable space–but as a wife and mother, behind closed doors, she and her family experienced unpredictable threat. The statistics are staggering–every 9 seconds in the United States, a woman is assaulted or beaten–but to Gwen, this was her secret; it was her shame. When her husband eventually turned his brutality on her son, she knew she could no longer remain silent.

Alternately heart-wrenching and joyful, this is a story of triumph over adversity–one woman’s uplifting account of learning how to forgive the unforgiveable, recover her sense of self, bring healing into her family, and honor the journey home. Accompanied by glimpses of celestial beings, Gwen charts a path through sorrow to joy–and ultimately, writes of the one perfect love we all seek.

The story that unfolds is not a blow-by-blow account of savagery hidden within a twenty-five-year marriage; rather, it is a walk through innocent dreams betrayed–to courage found. “Tragedy spares no one;” Gwen points out, “it just courts each of us differently. One way or another, it finds a path into our hearts, and there we do battle with the intruder.” As a survivor who came out of her unhealthy relationship determined to start over, Gwen artfully depicts the challenges of balancing the obligations of motherhood and career with her family’s healing process, while offering hope to anyone facing monumental challenges.

Integral to Gwen’s journey is her faith. Because of her Catholic upbringing, she struggles with the scandal of divorce, but finally makes her peace. When her daughter reveals her molestation by clergy, however, her fragile sense of serenity dissolves. We walk with Gwen as she tries to make sense of this horror. The agony experienced by the entire family is devastatingly palpable. Against all odds, Gwen emerges confident of her faith and begins to see the threads of meaning in even the darkest moments.

This is a book for all. But, for those who have been in a destructive relationship, Gwen’s story will be heartbreakingly familiar. For those who have been spared such diminishment, it will provide insight into the often misunderstood phenomenon of domestic violence. Since one in every four women will experience such threat in her lifetime, understanding that murky world may provide the reader with the skills needed to help his or her sister or friend or neighbor. Whether victim or friend, though, readers will be inspired by the author’s courage and ultimate resolution of her predicament. And, you may see your own challenges a little differently.

MY REVIEW: 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 Powerful, Provocative and potentially life-altering!

Each of us come to the place where we will read this work from such diverse directions. We will each interpret and attempt to define it in our many alternate ways. I bring to this reading a history of  abuse; accordingly my belief system was shakily formed and has remained under question for much of my life.

When I read the blurb, and several of the very eloquent reviews I almost stopped … I wanted to run like hell. My guts were telling me I’d feel every nuance of pain … my guts were uncannily right.

Author Gwen Plano has not simply invited me to read this book, from the opening pages, this author compelled me to read it. I figured if this woman has the courage to write it, then at the very least I should demand of myself the courage to read it.

Author Plano took me firmly by the heart and guided me through the occasional nightmarish quality of her life. Her honesty shook me, and I rejoiced to find an author unafraid to show herself as imperfect, willing to lay her soul bare in an effort to help others that may well be undergoing a similar horrendous, fearful and ultimately life-altering journey.

I have not yet experienced the great joy that comes from trusting so implicitly. However now, and largely thanks to the gift of author Gwen Planos writing, I have at last, again begun to question.  It is a powerful work indeed that can have caused that to eventuate. Please … do yourselves a favor … read this compelling book and open your heart. Take this journey with Author Gwen Plano and  perhaps come to a new understanding of just what true courage can do.

Jeff Lee.

Born in New York State, Jeff Lee was raised in the San Francisco Bay Area and has spent his entire writing career in Los Angeles.

For more than thirty years he has been a copywriter and creative director for some of the advertising industry’s most recognizable agencies, winning numerous awards for his creativity. None of those ad agencies are still in business, but Jeff appears to have a solid alibi.

Trained as a cook in the Army, he still enjoys being creative in the kitchen and admits that few things in life compare with the thrill of discovering you have just given a nasty case of food poisoning to 140 heavily armed men.

Jeff lives about halfway between Los Angeles and Santa Barbara, in a house he shares with his two sons and a cat that’s part golden retriever.

BOOK COVER HURRICANE KRETSCHMAN BY JEFF LEE JPG

HURRICANE KRETSCHMAN:

BLURB

All wisecracking, Harley-riding Repo Man and Bounty Hunter to the Stars Fish Fishbein wants is a cool vacation. It’s just him and his three best buds, potato-potato-potatoing down the highway — along with a force of nature named Shawna Kretschman, a bad-ass blonde with her own full-race hog. Not to mention a short fuse, serious fighting skills and an outfit that leaves zippo to the imagination. All lickety-splitting their way to Sturgis, South Dakota to link up with better than a million hard-drinking, harder partying Harley owners at the town’s annual Motor Cycle Rally.

But a high-powered real estate developer wants all the bikers gone, so he can sell the area as a family-oriented resort town. And he’ll stop at nothing – including murder – to get what he wants. Bikers and locals suddenly start dropping like road racers on a rain-slick GP course. And Fish, his friends and his big mouth are all in the developer’s crosshairs.

They’re on a hysterical collision course that includes phony cops, bar fights, pepper spray-laced paint balls, a no-holds-barred wrestling match in a ring full of chocolate pudding, getting adopted by the entire Sioux nation and manscaping.

The annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally might be an 80 year-old tradition. But it’s going to take all of Fish’s brains and a ton of luck to keep himself and his buds alive long enough to enjoy a few more seasons.

My Review 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 Hands-down, one of THE funniest Books I have read.

Every once in a rare while an author comes along with the comedic timing essential to writing a fast-paced one liner such as ‘Hurricane Kretschman’. Having been totally entertained by the three preceding books in this series, I was both curious and excited to see if this talented author could make me laugh out loud in public yet again. He did. Author Lee’s wonderfully creative touch has given substance to several amazing characters in his journey through the mayhem that is crafted within these pages.

Central character “Fish” Fishbein is more complex than you would suspect at first viewing. The layers of this hilariously funny and deeply caring man are peeled back slowly, and every clever line of dialogue is intertwined with the characters love for his crazy companions, Kenny and Einstein, as they decide to head across the USA to the Motor Cycle Rally to end all Rally’s in Sturgis, South Dakota.

His constant companions and partners in  … well … everything, are cleverly drawn. Well enough in fact, to become clearly visual and as equally lovable as they are chaotic.

To my delight (And Fish’s) a new character explodes into being along the way.

How on earth does a reviewer ever hope to encapsulate the outrageously funny, and often diabolically dangerous persona of Shawna Kretschman aka the Hurricane Kretschman of the books title.

Suffice it say that this beautiful blonde PTSD suffering, Harley riding ex-Military M.P with attitude to ‘die’ from …er … for, adds further dimensions to the reading enjoyment. She sets “Fish’s” pulses racing as fast as a hog on a racetrack. Has our hero found love at last?

Whether they live long enough to find that out remains to be seen.

Enter the villain in the unflattering shape of Dale Kimbrough, a land developer set on making the bikers (All of them) disappear so he can develop a family friendly place. What’s not family friendly about bikers?

Suffice it to say, bodies start appearing, and bad guys start disappearing in rapid succession. The developer badly underestimated just how much mayhem he was unleashing when he chose to take on our heroes.

I laughed out loud so often along the road of this amazing journey, it was indeed a pleasure to become reunited with author Jeff Lee’s superbly talented writing. I simply can’t recommend this book highly enough.

The rest of the world contributed a further 20 visitors! Considering the fact that I’m an Australian based author these stats are so very welcomed.

We all write because we love to do so! I’m no different. We wouldn’t put ourselves through all the angst of being a writer, otherwise. The icing on that cake is when other people purchase, read and hopefully enjoy our work. When that happens it sets off a chain reaction that reflects in that “Bottom line” we never thought we’d care about when we became writers.

SO! Lets get down to that, shall we? The SALES figures for my SPOTLIGHTED book “ACTS BEYOND REDEMPTION”

In the month of January I garnered For my featured book “Acts Beyond Redemption”  90 sales.

In my ‘Spotlight Author” month of February “Acts Beyond Redemption” Garnered 176 sales. Nuff said, folks? These figures really do speak for themselves, don’t they?

I re-located on February 27th to a small University Town hundreds of miles from Sydney! I was promised that I would have Internet connection within five days. Didn’t happen, folks! My internet was only connected YESTERDAY!  18 days later! Frantic doesn’t even come close to how I was feeling … on top of all the stress of such a big move. I logged in to Twitter only this morning to find that every one of my scheduled posts for the month to date had received continuous and marvelous support from all the folks at RRBC, despite the fact that I had been unable to offer reciprocal support for weeks!

Now THAT’S what I’m talking about.

I am one very happy camper!

Book Review: “Paper in The Wind” by Olivia Mason-Charles.

Book REVIEW Paper in the wind by Olivia Mason Charles.

book-cover-paper-in-the-wind-olivia-mason-charles

Blurb

Paper in the Wind is a compassionate and riveting story depicting a single father’s dedication to his daughter. In the midst of the overwhelming struggles that accompanied autism, he continues to persevere. Her father’s love enabled her to overcome insurmountable obstacles, discovered the power of love and embraced the gift of life.

MY REVIEW. 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 Read, learn and be inspired. An amazing journey.

This book is written with a deep understanding of Autism, and a thought provoking, and inspirational message of hope. It is not written blindly … it is not written without great thought and the exploration of human failings and tribulations, for it truly encompasses all that and much more.

It is written with all the damage exposed of a couple coping the best way they know how with their autistic daughter. They fail and they falter in the face of all the pain, stress, and worry for the future of their beloved Alexa. In short, the author makes them very human, so human in fact that I caught myself nodding my head in sad tears of understanding. Life throws such massive challenges in the path of these parents. The author permits us to see how constant stress and unrelenting concern for their child rips apart the fabric of a love once a towering wall and now forced to crumble into ruin … exhausted by circumstances.

Olivia Mason -Charles doesn’t ease you into this story, you are confronted and challenged every step of the way. The length of the book should not to be judged by the number of its pages, but rather for the incredibly powerful messages imparted within each page. How many of us would not turn to something, anything to help deal with the unrelenting stress? Whether that something is a spiritual guide to support strong held beliefs, or a substance that gives temporary relief, such as alcohol, we are not asked to make judgement here … we are invited to try and understand.

This author invites you into the world of an Autistic child, in all its complexity. She shows the debilitating effects and the incredible and naive cruelty of those that do not, and cannot, even begin to understand.

Alexa is wonderfully characterized with all the intricacy of learning to comprehend a world that she perceives differently to others.

We are invited to cry for her, and rejoice with her, and cheer her on from the sidelines!

Yet despite the confrontations these marvelous characters face, the overwhelming message within these pages is hope. Hope that exists because of the unrelenting love of a father, a human man, a man with all the imperfections that simply being human can bring. Take this journey Olivia Mason-Charles invites you on with her inspiring words; I believe you will find it a truly memorable one.

Book Review: ‘How Can You Mend This Purple Heart.” by Terry Gould.

BOOK REVIEW: “How Can You Mend This Purple Heart?” By Author TERRY GOULD. T.L Gould.

book-cover-how-can-i-mend-this-broken-heart-terry-gould

Winner of the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation’s James Webb Award for distinguished fiction

In this riveting first novel, author T. L. Gould draws on his experiences in a military hospital with severely wounded Marines recovering from the Vietnam War. He has created a plain-truth, no-holds-barred narrative, stark in its simplicity, detail, and humor. From dressing changes and morphine drips to off-site forays under a fence and into neighborhood bars and brothels, Gould chronicles the precipitous journey to recovery of the men of Ward 2B: how they learned to walk again, to love again, and to triumph over crippling injuries.

How Can You Mend This Purple Heart is not a story about combat in the jungles of Vietnam. It is a story about boys who returned from combat as men—men who left the better part of their youth, a bit of their souls, and a lot of their flesh in a battlefield on the other side of the world. It’s a story about their longing to recapture the spirit of boyhood and rekindle the optimism and fearlessness of youth. And it’s about their struggle to be whole again—or at the very least, to feel whole. It chronicles a journey of love, redemption, sorrow, and joy; a journey of pain and anger . . . and a journey of hope. But most of all, a journey of the human spirit and its triumph over the most impossible odds.

How Can You Mend This Purple Heart is a tribute to all the combat-wounded veterans of past and present conflicts. May they find the strength to continue their lives’ missions and know that the entire nation is grateful for their sacrifices.

The human spirit standing tall.
This 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 Review is from: How Can You Mend This Purple Heart? (Paperback)
I am privileged to own a copy of this book. Privileged indeed. Bookshelves hold the things we treasure; those books that linger in our memory and raise a smile, or cause our throats to constrict with unshed tears, our chests to tighten in helpless anger.

‘How Can You Mend This Purple Heart” does all of those things and more.

Do not read this book if you are looking for bloody scenes of war, they exist, but they exist in the memory of the men who returned from that war torn apart from planted mines.

They exist in the screams of night terror that echo through a hospital ward filled with men who survived the blasts, but not intact. They exist in the agony of knowing that for these men, life can never ever be the same again.

Do not read this book if you are looking for an easy read of mate-ship. It exists, but in the way of all things cruel and true, the mate-ship grows from shared terror, loss of limbs and shredding of innocence. Once the trust is established it can never be rent apart again.

Do not read this book anticipating only sadness; oh yes …  It exists, but in the way of the gallant and often surprising ways men reach out with unspoken need it is tempered with humor.

I laughed often during this journey of a book. I cried as well. but mostly I closed the final page with a feeling of kinship with the broken men who refused to just lay down and die. I closed it still angry about a war that they should never have had to fight.

I closed it with a smile at their kinship: and with hope for their futures.

I closed it with reluctance.

I recommend it with a certainty that the human spirit shines strong within those that have seen the worst man has to offer. I recommend it with a heartfelt hope, that their  indomitable  spirit will help prepare those whose innocence remains intact.book-cover-how-can-i-mend-this-broken-heart-terry-gould

America loves John Cannon, its newest hero, and the President wants to present him with the highest civilian medal for bravery for saving the Annapolis midshipman from a terrorist plot to destroy them. While in Washington for the award ceremony, John unwillingly becomes an accomplice in another plan by the same group to attack the credibility of the US President and the stability of the worldwide oil market. There is no way out as John either becomes a traitor to America or causes thousands of innocent people to die if he refuses.
The second John J. Cannon Thriller moves from a barrier Island off the coast of Texas to Washington DC, then to Northern California, and finally to Ecuador. John is on the receiving end of an offer he cannot, refuse. His avowed enemy Matt Jacobs now wants John to help him shake the reputation of the US in the world political arena. If John refuses, Matt plans to murder innocent Americans including John’s latest relationship. John’s only way out is to pretend to go along with the plan and hope for a miracle.

The first John J. Cannon Thriller is titled My GRL.

MY REVIEW: 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 Can’t wait to read the next in this series!

This is the second book I have read by this author. The first in this series is ‘My GRL’ which I enjoyed immensely, so I was looking forward to seeing just how things evolved in book 2.

I’m so pleased that I have read this series in order, although “His Revenge” could stand alone, I’m already a little familiar with the central character of John Cannon.

Familiar enough for me to already have formed a very real and almost comfortable liking for him. Author John W Howell allows us to become a part of just what makes reluctant hero Cannon tick, whilst still managing to surprise us with actions that are both a little uncharacteristic and yet highly understandable.

I’m reminded (happily) of Tom Clancy’s marvelous characterization of ‘Jack Ryan’ not so much by the actions of that character, but by the inherent decency of the man. Not so much naivety as an all pervading sense of what’s right.

Author John Howell evolves that differently with John Cannon. Nonetheless, he crafts a memorable and intensely readable persona.

Much has been said by others about the plot. I found it not only intriguing, but also formulated with a certain knowledge of just what makes readers eager to turn that next page.

Cannon is taken and drugged by terrorists out to destroy not only the American economy but to cause a worldwide financial crisis with all the possible catastrophic flow on that would ensue. He is forced to make a choice. He either records an interview that will blatantly lie, and consequently destroy the country he loves, financially, or, face the consequence of the death of a woman he has come to care for and all the many hundreds of other folks recovering from injuries at Bethesda Naval Hospital.

Faced with a dilemma that no man would ever want to make a conscience call on, John Cannon agonizes over what will do the greatest harm.

The action packed conclusion is stunning. The dialogue excellent, and my eagerness to read book 3 of the series caused me to buy ‘ Our Justice’ immediately.

BOOK REVIEW: “Finding Gina” by Lizzie Chantree.

FINDING GINA by LIZZIE CHANTREE

book-cover-finding-gina

A contemporary romance read with a magical twist! By Lizzie Chantree.

Can a sprinkling of stardust overcome a past full of demons?

Gina had traversed the breadth of the country in her little campervan to try and find everyone on her grandmother’s list, before her father drunk himself into an early grave. She leant down and pulled the battered and worn journal from her bag and opened it to the latest page. The neatly written names were etched onto her heart and she was determined to visit every single one and compensate them in some way. Her family’s debt had to be repaid.

Lewis read another provincial story about a ‘guardian angel’ who had been helping families across the country and his reporters nose began to itch. He was sure that if he could track down the girl they were talking about, he would unearth an even bigger story. He just had to work out how to locate her and then find out what it was that she was running from!

MY REVIEW. 🌟🌟🌟🌟 + A warm and entertaining read.

Romance isn’t a genre I read a great deal. When I do, I would normally look for something perhaps a little more gritty. However; I recently watched the book trailer for “Finding Gina” and it left me curious about just what the book would hold. So I went into the book understanding that it wouldn’t be offering the steamier side of romance. I read it based on that understanding.

Other reviewers have commented about the few editing glitches the book has, and yes, I noticed them, but they weren’t numerous so they didn’t prove to be too great a distraction.

The characterizations in the book are well drawn, and most, but not all the people you meet on Gina’s journey towards happiness are necessary and great additions to the overall story line.

The humor is quite delicious, and the misunderstandings between characters are a delight; and a reflection of the very human failing we all seem to possess, of looking for the worst case scenario and refusing to see the possibility of people just caring without a hidden agenda.

I was cheering for the good guys and hoping that all would come right in the end. If you are looking for steamy romance, you won’t find it here. This book plays gently with love, it offers up hope and just that feel good aftertaste of something sweet.

I wish we could give a 4+ rating, sadly we can’t. I enjoyed the book for what it is, a feel good and light, easy read, for those days when that is exactly what we need to sit down with.

It is a lovely story.  I found the only distraction for me was too many characters that didn’t need to be added to further the storyline. Would I read more of Lizzie Chantree’s work? Absolutely, yes! I believe her to be a very talented author.

Are you expecting a rave? Good … That’s what you’re getting.

Firstly let me shed some light on my previous experiences online …

My memoirs, ‘Empty Chairs” and “Faint Echoes of Laughter.” were both originally Traditionally published. Sadly, my publisher closed their doors, and my work disappeared from view.

I was gutted.

My confidence levels were at an all time low, and the thought of self-publishing was shoved to the end of my ‘Can do’ list.

I had made some lovely friends on line, and spent the next four-years on my old blog “Soooz Says Stuff” site, blogging, actively promoting contests that I created, promotions, new releases etc. You know the drill. “Soooz Says Stuff” had a total of 287 followers.

I was well in to writing my first thriller, loving the journey but having no end vision for what I would do with it when it was complete.

Like many of us; I was utterly hopeless at promoting my own work. My comfort zone was in bringing attention to the works of folks I admired.

Then, only four-months ago I stumbled upon Rave Reviews Book Club.

I read and re-read the rules of the club, took a close look at what they were doing and more importantly just how they went about it. I liked what I saw.

That was only four-short-months ago.

Let me share a few statistics with you, for both prior to #RRBC & AFTER Joining.

BEFORE #RRBC =June 2016 … 1423 Followers on Twitter. NO new followers in June.

AFTER Joining #RRBC= July 2016 …2052 Followers on Twitter. 629 NEW FOLLOWERS.

I took part in a wonderful blog party tour hosted by #RRBC It was THE most commented on and successful post I’ve ever had. My friend list exploded! My TBR grew huge.party_balloons-29RRBC blog party header must use.

This trend has continued … as at around five-minutes ago, My Followers on Twitter number 3580. I have almost tripled my Followers.

My book “Acts Beyond Redemption” was selected as one of #RRBC’s OCTOBER books of the month. The response and huge support of the #RRBC community garnered me more sales than I had ever had of my book, and the reviews just keep on coming.

rrbc-trailer-block-party-1-badge

Yes, I am taking part! My trailer and post is scheduled for NOVEMBER 22nd, and I am extremely excited, and why wouldn’t I be?

One of THE most important things to note about the ‘reviews’ is that this club INSISTS on HONEST reviews. If the book is amazing then of course say so. BUT if you can only offer a constructive review and rate it less than 4/5 stars, then you are encouraged to do so. Honest Reviews mean exactly that.

RRBC is achieving something very important here, the club recognizes talent, and does everything it can to promote and share that talent. That support translates into the “bottom line.”

rrbc-plain-badgeI am and always have been a huge supporter of Indie Authors if I admire their work.

I have finally found a warm supportive home where all of us are like-minded. And to TOP all of this amazing stuff, My memoir “Empty Chairs” and Faint Echoes of Laughter” are BOTH sitting comfortably in the TOP 100 in their genre In Kindle in the U.K.

BOOK REVIEW: It Begins and Ends with Family. Author Jo Ann Wentzel.

Let’s meet the author!

book-review-bio-best-for-jo-ann

For several decades in addition to other jobs, I wrote. Mainly non -fiction for many online websites and several in print places. I worked for weekly newspapers. I was involved in Parenting Today’s Teen in a couple capacities. I was a Small Business Examiner and also wrote articles for rescue pets at the Examiner. I wrote for Helium, Associated Content, Suite 101 where I specialized in party and holiday articles. I covered many topics but many of my articles were parenting ones many geared towards foster parents. I also wrote a non -fiction book about our many years as foster parents and working with clients and young people and their families. It Begins and Ends with Family is available as an e-book on Amazon. The print format will also be on Amazon in a couple days. You can get it right now at Create Space.

Just recently I began to expand my writing and released my first fiction book. It is called Ultimate Betrayal. There are similar titles so find the one by Jo Ann Wentzel. It is a Christian book about end times and good versus evil. It features a ‘what if ‘scenario where a certain criminal element explodes till no one knows what to do with them. The solution is almost as bad as the problem. I’ve already been asked for a sequel. You can buy this book in e-format and print on Amazon and in print format on Create Space.

Knowing that the audience is all that matters and they are how books get noticed, read and reviewed, I humbly ask for your support.

book-review-cover-jo-ann-wentzel

It Begins and Ends with Family is a book written by parents who fostered over 75 kids, mainly teen aged boys and often eight at one time. The book relates the experiences of a foster parent and some of the discoveries made about why and how to foster. These parents learned that everything comes down to families. It starts with how children are raised and what type of family dynamics are present in their natural family. It continues with what the foster family can do with these children once the dysfunctional family unit has spoiled them. It ends when the foster family has done all they can to undo any harm done and start that child on the right path. Family impacts the situation when the child returns to their family of birth and needs to fit in again but, often with a whole new set of rules and values. The real key to calling this experiment a success is when these children grow up and have relationships and children of their own. So it truly has everything to do with family.

Our house was for those who had so many behavior issues that it was our house or detention. We had some of the worse kids and some of the most damaged. We know every child we fostered was not a success, but we can still offer advice since difficult kids demanded unique parenting methods. We hope you enjoy the descriptions of some of the kids we fostered and their specific issues we tried to solve. After working with all types of kids each with their own different challenges, we are sure you will enjoy the antics and anecdotes involved with many years of working with kids from many Midwest counties.

MY REVIEW 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 It Begins and Ends with Family.

I believe that reviewing non-fiction presents us with a unique challenge. It requires the reader to focus on the fact that these people are real.

These people are not the fictitious characters we all love to escape with. These folks exist in the world, they feel, they cry, they laugh and sometimes they bleed.

For this reader, this book hit a chord, a raw nerve ending. That moment when the recognition at gut level hit so hard I needed to stop for a moment, take a deep breath and then continue, simply because I needed more.

Author Jo Anne Wentzel writes with love, she writes with knowledge and compassion, more importantly … she writes with a truth and honesty that is as soul touching and memorable as anything I have ever read in non-fiction, perhaps even more so.

The definition of the word “Foster” says in part, ‘ To encourage the development of (something, especially something desirable).’

That something in this book is the development of a nurturing, structured and loving environment for damaged children. A place where they can learn to feel safe. A place where they can perhaps learn what it is to trust.

The author and her marvelous family provide a safe haven where children are given the chance to feel loved, for perhaps the first time in their chaotic, disturbing and often dangerously unpredictable lives.

It is a book that caused me to cry, and then laugh through my tears, as the author’s humor surfaces. Moments when all I could do was nod my head and say to myself, ‘Ah, yes.’

In this readers opinion, this book should be ‘Mandatory reading’ for all people intending to foster a child, or already fostering.

The system doesn’t always work the way it is intended to, and so many children slip through the cracks.

I for one am so grateful that people like this author and her family were there to pick up those pieces, and put them back together again with the binding element of love.

Talent Spotter #14. Featured Author: Bev Allen.

My featured author today is Bev Allen.

The Tattooed Tribes.

Talent Spotter Bev Allen Tattoed Tribe cover

From war they came, from violence they became. Now on a faraway world our settlers see war looming once more. The settlers had to adapt to survive, once again living off the land like our ancestors of old. The Tribal Liaison Guild is formed to distill tension between the tribes, as the smallest issue could now lead to war. John Harabin is the senior Liaison Officer, and he needs an apprentice to train for the future.

A lad from town, sixteen year old Lucien Devlin, becomes John’s perfect protégé. He loves the wild jungle and his curiosity craves to see the tribes above the cataracts, except he doesn’t follow rules, yet rules are all that will keep him alive in that treacherous territory. Criminals kidnap a young girl to stir up unrest, whilst exploitation threatens domestic peace. Tensions rise when John Harabin liaises to distill the volatile situation, but standing in his path is the rebellious Lucien.

Tense action and adventure ensue, Lucien’s quest becomes a path of destiny, and it’s now up to Lucien and his friends to find a solution that will lead to peace.

One of the Five star reviews from The Tattooed Tribes.

Format: Kindle Edition

When Jon Harabin of the Tribal Liaison Guild takes on an apprentice to accompany him beyond the cataracts into tribal lands, nothing prepares him for Lucien Devlin. This boy has a real issue with authority and often lands up in trouble, but his high spirits may just save the day.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading about these tribes on another world, the jungle, the river, the sense of colour and culture, and the characters are real, I certainly identified with them. Even the criminals were well-rounded and believable, and added spice to an already exotic tale.

Add to that some great twists and surprises and it will keep you reading too. Definitely worth it!

MY REVIEW:🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

On a distant and often hostile world, the human race survives. Their ancestors learned of war first hand, and now their world is under threat as the devastation of war looms once again.

Author Bev Allen has a deep understanding of the fears and traditions that drive us all in order to survive, her characters spring from that empathy. Each character is crafted so beautifully that we begin to understand the passions and the traditions that drive them forward, not always with wisdom.

The author gives us an entire world here, a world and a people with honor, tradition and custom.

A society that now balances on the edge.

John Harabin is tasked to seek balance between the factions, and to that end, he chooses an apprentice to further that work.

That choice: A sixteen-year-old young man named Lucien.

Lucien is willful, defiant, and hell bent on causing John Harabin more than his share of nightmare situations. A teenager of the future.

The fragile peace is put at great risk by the kidnapping of the daughter of a highly placed official.

Fingers of blame are pointed and tensions rise dangerously.

In order to forestall war they must find the girl.

The land is wild, and beautiful; and as all wild country is, it possesses inherent danger.

The author has managed to intertwine the world of Science Fiction with fantasy and more; it is a marriage of genres and it works beautifully aided by her deft and descriptive touch.

I’m very aware of spoilers and this book is too good to spoil for the reader, it is a clever, thoughtful and deeply insightful journey into our fears, our joys, and the traditions that make us human and vulnerable.

I can’t recommend it highly enough.
